February 16, 1935 – May 12, 2025
Art Hougland Jr., the epitome of a Colorado man left this world on May 12, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but his beloved Colorado mountains never left his heart. Born in Leadville, Colorado February 16, 1935, Art served in the United States Marine Corp. He wore many professional hats including serving as Police Chief and City Manager of Aspen. He was a well-respected wildfire mitigation expert in Colorado.
Art was married three times and he leaves behind four daughters, Vannessa Hougland-Robb (Bruce) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Carol Hougland of Rifle, Colorado, Donna Hougland of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Judy Hougland of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and a son, Lance Swallow (Annaliza) of Garden Grove, California.
Art is best known for his love of skiing. He organized many hut trips into the Colorado backcountry, where he and his good friends would have a lively time. Whether downhill, cross country, telemark skiing, or on the dance floor, Art displayed impressive style. Art spent many days as an ambassador for Aspen SkiCo.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Hougland Sr. and Dorothea Hougland, and grandson Shane Pittser. In addition to his children, he is also survived by three grandchildren, Seth, Christopher and Madison; thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandbaby as well as his sister Kathryn Taggart and sons Andrew andTade Shivley and their children
A Celebration of Life is planned for September 13, 2025, at Veltus Park in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. More details to follow.
